2019 Rogers Scholar and McCreary Central High School student Alexa Bruce is hoping to cheer up patients separated from their loved ones because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bruce created and designed 100 greeting cards for patients at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehab in Somerset, KY., who, at the time, were in isolation due to COVID-19 and unable to visit with family members.
“My heart was very full that I could brighten the residents’ day,” Bruce said. “I sent each an Easter message that contained the word of God. If they know God’s love and grace, they will not feel alone during these times of isolation.”
Each of the 100 greeting cards in the Cards for Caring Rogers Scholars community service project were personally designed by the high school student and included a Bible verse to offer a word of encouragement to patients.
The project was launched in April during the COVID-19 quarantine when family and friends were not allowed to visit patients in nursing and rehabilitation centers for health and safety reasons. The delivered greeting cards were even placed in isolation for three days before they could be distributed to patients on Easter Sunday.
Bruce said she received positive feedback from both the nursing staff and residents. Some of the comments were, “You brightened so many people’s day with your beautiful cards. Most residents had them where they could see them for many days. Your thoughtfulness was a true blessing!”
The lesson learned: “A little kindness goes a long way!”
