2019 Rogers Scholar and Elliott County High School student Kinley Lewis presents a check to school officials for donations raised through her “Sweets for Safety” fundraiser.
She donated $1,487 and six boxes of personal protective equipment to the school district from proceeds raised from a dessert auction, held in conjunction with Kinley’s Cakes, and community donations.
“I always strive to help and give back to my community in any way possible. My hometown has definitely suffered since the pandemic. Businesses have closed, and moral is definitely running low. This project gave me a way to help both my community and school system and bring everyone together again to spread hope and the feeling of community again.”
Each graduate of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program is required to complete a community service project. For more information about Rogers Scholars, visit www.centeryouthprograms.com.
