2022 Rogers Scholar Shalit Ebenezer, a student at Letcher County Central High School, raised approximately $4,488 to help with the Eastern Kentucky flood relief efforts. She decided to earmark the money raised in the “Finding Hope in Darkness” community service project to three Letcher County residents who lost everything in the flood.

“Seeing these three senior citizens’ faces filled with relief just made my day. This project was important to the people, the community, and me. Seeing them happy and filled with joy was the greatest result of this project.”

Graduates of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program are required to complete a community service project.
