2019 Rogers Scholar Brett Roark honored fallen veterans and current military service men and women by organizing a 22-mile march on Veterans Day at the Harlan County High School football field. The Harlan County Veterans Day March was held to raise awareness for the number of veterans whose lives are lost each day to suicide and to serve as a fundraiser to support deployed Kentucky National Guard troops.

“This project was very important to me and even more important to my county,” said Roark, a junior at Harlan County High School. “Veterans are a large part of our county and we can never do enough to thank them for their sacrifices.”

The event was held in conjunction with Roark’s Rogers Scholars community service project in cooperation with the Harlan County School District, Harlan County High School JROTC, Appalachian Challenge Academy, Cub Scout Pack 149, and the Kentucky National Guard.

Roark is the son of Brent and Kristina Roark of Pineville.
