2021 Rogers Scholar and Boyd County High School student Sydney Kinnel donated 10 hand-crocheted beanies to the Julie Ditty Qualls Foundation in memory of her tennis coach.

The “Crochet for Change” community service project was a labor of love for Kinnel. She spent 60 hours crocheting the beanies for cancer patients in memory of Julie Ditty Qualls, a professional tennis player who died in 2021.

“Julie Ditty made a significant impact on my community and everyone in it. Her kindness and generosity made Ashland and beyond a better place. It means a lot to me that I have been able to help women in her name.”

Each graduate of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program is required to complete a community service project. For more information about Rogers Scholars, visit www.centeryouthprograms.com.
